How to spot a fake Prime Day deal

  1. Ignore the list price. Compare the sale price to what the item actually sold for over the last few months. Amazon product pages now include a price history link.
  2. Watch for inflate-then-discount. If the price jumped in the weeks before the sale, the "discount" may just bring it back to normal.
  3. Check who is selling it. Prefer items sold or shipped by Amazon or a well-known brand store.
  4. Read the fine print on coupons. Some prices only apply after you clip an on-page coupon or use a code.
  5. Do not rush lightning deals. A countdown timer is not proof of a good price. Check the history first.
